Before electricity and refrigeration, river ice was used to keep food and beverages cold. Discover how our great-grandparents cut blocks of river ice and hauled it by horse and wagon to the home ice house where it was stored in sawdust for a year.

PowerPoint presentation by Chemung River Friends Executive Director Jim Pfiffer.

Includes actual ice saws, picks and drills used to harvest river ice, loaned by the Big Flats Historical Society.

Door prize: Bottle of New York State ice wine donated by Lighthouse Liquors & Wines 1141 Broadway in Southport.
