When 20 Below Zero was a Good Day to be on the River. The History of River Ice Harvesting

Before electricity and refrigeration, river ice was used to keep food and beverages cold. Discover how our great-grandparents cut blocks of river ice and hauled it by horse and wagon to the home ice house where it was stored in sawdust for a year.
