Juneteenth is a celebration in honor of the African American experience, where respect is paid to those who suffered through the insituition of slavery. It is a celebration of pride and rich heritage, particulary meaningful to Elmira. Our community was a destination stop of both the Aferican American slaves traveling the Underground Railroad, and the Civil Wat soldiers who would determine the fate of slavery in this land. Such a history points to the great significance and poignancy of the Elmira Juneteenth commemoration.
