Come face to face with an intriguing past at the Chemung Valley History Museum or one of our other local historical societies. Learn about some of our hometown heroes including Ernie Davis, the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. Ernie was famously known as “The Elmira Express” and the 2008 Universal Studios film The Express is based on his remarkable life. Bring to light your family’s role in our history with abundant genealogy resources available at the Steele Memorial Library and the Chemung Valley History Museum’s Research Room.
Located in the heart of Mark Twain Country, Elmira houses the “largest concentration of Victorian-era homes in the State of New York”. The Chemung Valley abounds with many fine examples of the prestigious turn of the century architects Pierce & Bickford including Elmira’s City Hall, The Christmas House on Maple Avenue and the original Elmira Heights Village Hall. Take in our vast assortment of historical architecture on a self-guided walking tour of the Historic Near Westside or check out the annual Holiday Home Tour and Elmira Blooms Victorian Garden Tour. ![]() |
